Grayson's Cowboy Wish Comes True

Grayson is a sweet four-year-old who enjoys music, dancing, and any sport with a ball. Grayson was born with a rare, incurable metabolic condition leaving him with a compromised immune system and delayed development. In his young life, he’s already had to endure a bone marrow transplant, debilitating chemotherapy, long stretches of isolation, powerful drug infusions and endless medical appointments. His medical condition puts him at high risk of frequent severe infections, and he needs protection from day-to-day exposure to illness. Despite all this Grayson dreams of learning to drive a car someday and loves excavators, trucks and horses. He calls horses “yee-haws”.

During his many hospital visits, the one thing that lifted Grayson’s spirits was watching anything on television about horses. It was no surprise that his most heartfelt wish was to be a cowboy.

His wish brought him to Southern Alberta and the Anchor D Ranch. Grayson’s wish was fulfilled when he bravely climbed up onto Muffin the horse for the first time. He also enjoyed cooked s’mores over an open fire and making friends with the dogs that live at the ranch. His parent’s marveled at Grayson’s joy, noting that due to appointments for both Grayson and his brothers, “His life doesn’t involve a lot of extras.” It was the chance to do something just for Grayson that his parents appreciated most about his wish experience.

“His wonder and awe when we drove up to the ranch and he realized this was all for him was a big highlight," said Jessica, Grayson's mom. “It gave us time together that we just don’t normally get, time to enjoy each other’s company.”

"In the time leading up to Grayson’s wish, looking forward to it helped him get through some very difficult days and nights," said Jessica. "And then, the three days that we spent at the ranch for Grayson’s wish made all the difference in the world. I mean, seeing the joy on his face when he touched Muffin the horse was just beyond our wildest expectations. I can tell you, hearing his adorable giggles as he played with the ranch dogs was like seeing the sun come up for the first time. What a life-affirming experience for all of us!"

When a wish is granted, it does much more than bring joy to a child’s heart. For wish kids like Grayson, who are faced with critical illnesses, a wish-come-true provides them with strength to battle through darkness and hope for healthier, happier days ahead.
