Alena's wish makes her feel special

Alena was just 3-years-old when she was diagnosed with refractory epilepsy, but it did not stop her from sharing her contagious smile with everyone. At 6-years-old she loved the color pink and singing to her favorite tunes. Her wish was to meet Katy Perry, and in the fall of 2014 her wish came true.

Alena’s day started off with a trip to salon, followed by a chauffeured limo ride to the concert venue. Alena and her family were taken backstage to the meet and greet room where they awaited the arrival of Katy Perry.  Once her idol arrived, Alena spent time with her talking about boys, dancing to “Roar”, and singing their hearts out together. Katy was also able to give Alena some motivational advice and an experience that will never forget. After the meet and greet, the family returned to their seats to watch the full concert. Katy even gave Alena a shout-out on stage after she spotted her!

Getting to sing and dance with Katy was the most memorable moment for Alena. “It made me feel like I’m special and she (Katy) cares about kids with Epilepsy too”.

Now 10 and working hard in grade 4, Alena tells us (in a carefully crafted, hand-written note), that she recently celebrated two years seizure-free. She loves to dance and sing (and her mom says she’s getting very tall!), and she’s busy in school, which she says is sometimes difficult because of her condition. “Some people think I’m contagious,” she says, but it doesn’t stop this dynamo. “I know in my heart of hearts that I’m me and that’s all that matters.”
